Thoughtful Thursday: Remembering Auschwitz

Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself
(Matthew 22:39)

Seventy years ago Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated.

Approximately 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, died at Auschwitz and over 6 millions Jews were systematically murdered by the Nazi regime during World War II.

We must NEVER forget these horrors, no matter how terrible they are.

We must not hide our children from the truth. They must understand the importance of tolerances towards ALL others as hate and intolerance leads to places like Auschwitz.

We need to LOVE our neighbours regardless of their; colour, their religion, their sexual orientation, their language, their country of birth, their political ideology - if they are completely different to you or me.

This is commanded of us by God.

  1. I couldn't agree more. We must never forget the horrors inflicted and ensure it never happens again.

    1. Or even down grade them to something less significant.

  2. Such atrocities are terrible... and yet, as much as people are horrified by them, the world often sits by and watches while similarly terrible atrocities still take place today. Nobody *really* learns from history, sadly.
As believers, it is important that we very carefully learn from history though - after all, history is, in a way, what our faith is based on (after all, Jesus was crucified nearly 2000 years ago)!

    1. Of course we never learn as we are seeing in places like Syria but I still think it is important to teach children tolerance, even if that means that they don’t tease another child or when they grow up they know how to treat others in the work place. We might not be able to change the world, but we might be able to make a small differences in our small part of the world!
